I am considering reclassing to be a 74D and I would like to know what I'll will be getting myself into. My biggest questions are:
How are prior-service treated at AIT?
How hard is it to go to college in this MOS?
What is a typical duty day like?
Is this MOS like the MOS im in now were the army will let any retard of the street be in it?

74D is actually a good MOS for promotions. If you are an NCO, you would be able to go to the BNCOC-R class. 74D is OSUT (One Station Unit Training). So, Basic Training and AIT are combined. If you would be an insert there in the AIT portion, you would be treated better than the privates but, not as well as you would like to be treated. You would still have a drill sergeant. Things might have changed since I reclassified 8 years ago. It is hard to describe a typical day for a 74D because you could have an NBC room (or be BN or BDE level depending on rank), be in a Chemical Company doing many different things Smoke/Decon,BIDS,Recon, etc... or you could be an instructor. There are numerous other jobs that I havent described so a typical day can't really be described. One thing you can count on,....if you have vehicles..you'll probably be in the motor pool often! Going to college in this MOS is actually pretty good. This also depends on where you are at. But, it is better for us than for tankers and infantry men for example.

When is the Chemical Conference?
The Joint CBRN Conference(formerly the WWCC)was 26-29 June at Fort Leonardwood. It was hosted by NDIA (National Defense Industrial Association). So there will not be another one until next year.

Maybe someone knows that will read this blog but when I reclassified, it was still at Fort McClellan.
I went and re classed last year (2005). There were about 30 of us that re classed. As NCO's we were treated like crap. We stayed in an open bay. There was no BNCOC R. Every thing we learned you should already pretty much know, except for the smoke portion.
I just took over an NBC Room. they still have the old hoods for there mask. I would like to now if there a way too get some second skins for everyone so i can get rid of the hoods.

They are Class 9Z and they are about $16.34 a piece. Get with your supply sergeant to order these. These are the newer second skins that go with the JSLIST suits. Check out your CDE and ensure these are the ones you area authorized. The other second skins are NSN:

One of my company CBRN soldiers is trying to set up her teams for her company. She was asked how many soldiers were required for the recon (chem/rad) for the advon team. FM 3-19 is vague (because all units are different). I'm considering suggesting 1 per squad/section, as that's the "rule of thumb" I've grown accustom to, but I'm not sure where to go to substatiate this. Can you offer any assistance?

I need more info on the M22 ACADA. I was asked by one of the squad leaders in my company about how they worked. He wants to be able to answer any questions that his joes could think up. I was also wondering if there are any pre made PPT classes on the M22. I gave him what I had but I would like something more professional. I myself would also like to know about the inner workings of the ACADA.
I need to give a class on chlorine to my company, but in order to grab the attention of the infantry I'm looking for some pictures to start the class with. Some pics of chlorine burns, what it does to your lungs, etc. to make sure they get the info stuck in their brain. Know where I can get any?
I trying to put a class together on how to react to a CBRNE attack! I got the class but I want pictures... Like the terrible after math if an attack was to happen! I want my company to understand the impaortance of CBRNE issues!

I just took over a CBRN room in Korea [Yongsan] and noticed some of its pro masks had outdated drinking tubes I thought that they were supposed to be all switched out by now I have the new ones but cant figure outhow to change them do I need a certain tool or do i just pull them out and what was the reason that the old ones where outdated

When I went in 06 it was OSUT meaning BCT and AIT were together.
My wife is at Ft Leonardwood right now. 74D A.I.T. It is not OSUT anymore. She had to move a few blocks over after basic training. She has new NCO's now. I understand most of what she needs to do, but I have a few questions for some of you. She has not worked a five day week yet. She is in her 5th week of AIT. Is that normal to only work 3 or 4 days a week? Also, she has to sleep in MOPP 4 at least once a week. Most of the time it is on a weekend. Is that normal? I think your wife is telling you a bunch of crap about sleeping in MOPP 4 and all that crap because it doesn't happen. This is coming from a former Drill Sergeant and the first Plt Sgt when they took away the AIT Drill Sergeants. The other thing is this, one of the major differences between the M40 and M40A1 is the hood and nose cup changed. Anytime you see an A, A1, or A2 on some equipment then there has been a modification.
I am in iraq and my supply sgt came up short a few masks and i need the nsn numbers for all the seperate parts of the M40A1 Mask. in case you guys know the parts are a class 9 item and you can piece together a mask and not take a loss. please help me out
The TM has all of the NSN's you'll need. Ordering the parts to assemble a complete mask has been common practice for a long time, however, the face pieces usually take a long time to make their way to the units ordering them. If you're down range then you should have priority, but that could still take awhile so keep that in mind if you have any inventories coming up.

Is there a FM where you can find the CBRN/NCOIC chain of command? and being the CBRN/NCO who is your supervisor or who is suppost to councel you?
Your chain of command for anything none NBC related is your squad leader then your platoon sgt so on and so forth.
Now, if it is chemical related your chain is 1sg and then command. You don't have to report to your squad leader or platoon sgt. But, in regards to customs and courties I suggest you do. You many piss off your chain of command.

74D is/has and always will be a non combat MOS. Therefore, there are FEMALES in the field of CBRN.
Downfall, you can be stuck in with grunts. Why, because as NBC you are a support channel. Each UMR to each company is authorized one NBC qualified soldier. Not that it will happen but it can. You can kick and scream about being with grunts.
The most that will happen at this time... You will swap places with a male NBC qualified soldier provided there is someone available.
You may have to ride it out until a deployment rolls around. *shruggs* By then you will already be use to the soldiers around you.

I went to Leonard Wood last fall to reclass. It was the worst I was ever treated outside of basic training. I am an E-5 who served in Desert Storm so I've been around awhile. (Got out in 94 then went Guard a year or two ago.)They got rid of drill sgts and the Cadre there are bitter and treat you like crap. A reclass PFC asked an E-7 if he could ask her a question and her response was "Shut the F*** up!" They wanted an E-8 MOS-T student to stand at parade rest when he spoke to them. (They are all E-6s and E-7s.)Then they had us staying in these busted out trailers because they didn't have the room to put us anywhere else. They had PT 6 times a week. Muscle failure MWF and a long, FAST run TTS. And ABSOLUTELY no drinking at any time. Even on the weekends. If they caught you you were booted and given an article 15. These people are out of hand and I would recommend anything else but Leonard Wood. If you're guard, take the class online if at all possible. That being said, the instructors were all pretty decent. It was mainly the cadre that were ignorant. And interestingly enough, I didn't see any combat patches on any of their arms.
I am currently deployed and am going to be making my E-5 promotion before I get back. I am wanting to go be an instructor at Ft. Leonardwood because I feel I have more to give soldiers there then I do at my current unit being the Company NBC NCOIC. I just want to know who I have to contact in order to have my name put in for volunteer AIT Instructor and what all I have to do in order to do this. Please any help would be appreciated.
The difference between the M40 and the M40A1 mask is the "addition" of the second skin. The nose cup is a modification from the old and the hood was modify to accommodate the second skin.

MOS-T, the only difference is youll live in the Alpha building (residence side) Again! BCT and AIT are not combined! You will not have D/S in AIT,you will not be stuck in the NBC room unless you choose to be an individual with your unit. You may also be attached to a Chem Unit which youll live, train and deploy with other Dragon Soldiers (we dont do motor pool detail! If you are selected for L4 (bids) L5 (recon) or L6 (striker) you may end up with Armor division (great missions for L5 recon guys)

I just re-classed to 74D...I love it
The MOS-T or reclass soldiers live in 2 man rooms in portable trailers with 12 individuals in each. They are expected to perform all of the duties that the privates do, with the exception of fire guard. We all had to do BN Staff duty though, so it evened out. Being MOS-T we did get Sundays off. Of course all of the other rules are the same. No alcohol, no smoking during the duty day, daily PT, and as an E-5 I was responsible for 150 Privates during the class day which included marching all of them to and from chow, and handling them in the classroom, due to the shortage of the PSGs. Typical Army School other than that.
7-Dec-2010 As of today my Platoon Sergeant put down info that all E5 and Below for 74D are over strength. Soldiers at time of reenlistment or end of contract will be given 3 choices reclass to MOS of your Choice, Reclass at the needs of the Army, or Separate from the Army.
I have to give two classes to my unit. One being "Depleted Uranium Awareness" and the other being "CBRN Defence". Does anyone know where I can find these classes on powerpoint or on an old US Army video online to download. If I had any FMs it wouldn't be that big of an issue, but I have none. Kinda up sh*t creek w/o a paddle! Thanks!

i am prior servis, 54B when i inlisted, and 74D when i got out.... this is the most battle foreward mos a female can be. it is physicaly demanding, also females may be placed in infantry units, i was in the 1st en bn 24th ID ... combat engeneer unit in the nations only decon platoon. i deployed to iraq in 2003, and became the first lioness... first woman tecknicaly on the front lines. i loved it...no regrets. its the closest to special forces you can get as a female because it allowes oppertunities to be sloted in infantry units. to the girl who neded the skins its under d9 in supply you can order all parts seperatly and build your own... and those will not be included in your count if you dont want
74D is the most physically demanding job a female can do in the army, becides a track mechanic. it allows females to be placed in combat units. i was in 1st EN 1st1st BDE 24th ID. i was deployed in 03 with first bregade and became the first official female on the front lines. i was the lead lioness (a female raid team) its the closest to special forces a female can get... we did raids with them. as far as the one who was wondering about second skin, you can order all parts off the D9 section as maintenance parts for masks you currently have... you can build complete masks this way that are not accountable. best job for females in the army..... if you can hang.
the cams or ACADAS have raidio active parts in them, they "can locate chemical weapons in the air and an alorm sounds... the should be placed around the parimiter, the m22 should be outside the whire. it does not deturmine what chem or how much, but by placing them in a circumfrience around the wire, you can get a direction. the should be taken once a year for maintenance.... worthless you ask me.
drinking tubes can be pulled out... and they have to be changed every time you re issue a mask, just like the seals and cannisters... and the patts test... they are contaminated, and aquire a biofilm that in the event the mask is used in theater in a chemical enviroment could become a bio hazard....
you js list suit is only good for 12 hours... after contamination... and 24 after dawned
for the chloriene class id CS them and let them burn, then at the end tell them chloriene is worse... this is how to handle, decon, deploy ect...
when it comes to chemical reaction the best way to train soldiers is to train them.... have attacks where they have what is it 7 min to get to mopp 4 mabye 9 .... any way the best way to do it is to make them, also i made layovers of all the fall out rates that go over a topical map telling your talk instantly eta on evacuation as well as where to place your decon site. there is an sop on it from the 70s u gotta just find it
